Marriott Marquis Chicago Hotel Opens, Wintrust Arena Hosts First Event

Featuring 1,205 sleek and modern rooms, the Marriott Marquis opened in September as Chicago’s sixth largest hotel. Cloaked in a distinctive blue glass curtain wall, the 40-story structure adds a bold new dimension to the rapidly-evolving McCormick Square skyline.

The hotel’s sweeping lobby entrance is marked with modern luxury finishes. In addition to well-appointed guest rooms and 44 luxury suites, hotel patrons can enjoy a state-of-the-art fitness center, club lounge, and street-level bar and restaurant areas. The hotel features 93,000 square feet of meeting space, 43,000 square feet of breakout space, two 25,000 square-foot ballrooms, as well as a signature event space on the 33rd floor offering striking views of downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan.

Marriott Marquis links directly via pedestrian bridges to the McCormick Place Convention Center and the adjacent Wintrust Arena, which hosted its first public event when Chicago Federation of Labor gathered 900 guests for lunch served on tables set up on the playing surface of the 10,387-seat state-of-the art stadium.

Chicago Police Department (CPD) Bike Unit Relocates to McCormick Square Campus

If you think you’ve seen more police on bikes rolling on and around the campus and surrounding neighborhoods, your eyes are not deceiving you.  Under a joint agreement between the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) and the CPD, the bike unit has moved into the Lakeside Center from Millennium Park.

More than 60 police officers make up the CPD Bike Unit.  The campus and surrounding neighborhood is also used for training of new officers on bikes; often as many as 25 officers at a time can be seen snaking through the greater South Loop area in formation as they roll out to their patrols.

Warrior Games, Headquartered at McCormick Square, Inspired Us All

For the first time, the Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games were held at a location other than a military installation or U.S. Olympic Training Facility, allowing civilians better access to the games.

Running for a week in early July, the Warrior Games featured Paralympic-style competition in eight sports, including archery, cycling, field, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and wheelchair basketball.

More than 250 wounded, ill or injured athletes representing the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Special Operations Command (SOCOM), the Australian Defence Force and the U.K. Armed Forces participated in this year’s games, which attracted massive media attention, including a feature story on the NBC Nightly News.

The U.S. Navy hosted the 2017 DoD Warrior Games in partnership with the City of Chicago. The Games were held at a variety of prominent locations throughout the downtown area of Chicago, including the McCormick Place, the United Center and Soldier Field.

Prairie District Park, New “Pocket Park,” Opens North of Campus

The South Loop’s newest Park, Prairie District Park, opened on the corner of Prairie and 21st Street.  Located just north of the new Marriott Marquis Chicago Hotel,  the park features a playground with water sprayers for children, a combination turf and pavement area for dogs, and a plaza with seating in between.  The Playground is open from dawn to dusk and the Dog Park is open 5:30 a.m. to until 10:30 p.m.

What’s Coming:  Open House Chicago, A McCormick Square Two-Fer

Once again McCormick Square will be an active participant in Open House Chicago, the city’s day-long effort to open up the city’s great buildings and spaces to area residents.  On October 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. our Open House Chicago offerings will include a chance to visit our 2.5-acre rooftop garden on the 5th floor of the West Building (which produces 8,000 pounds of herbs and vegetables annually) and a chance to get inside the new Wintrust Arena to watch the DePaul University men’s and women’s basketball teams practice.  More information at Open House Chicago.

Wintrust Arena to Host Pelli/Gensler Conversation as Part of Chicago Architectural Biennial

On Nov. 2 from 6-7 pm the Wintrust Arena, designed by Cesar Pelli, will host Pelli and Art Gensler, design architect of the neighboring Marriott Marquis Chicago hotel, for a moderated conversation with both architects.  They will discuss their work and share their vision for architecture and communities as they consider the Biennial’s theme of Make New History.  They will share their insights on contemporary architecture practices and how they grapple with the future of architecture.  More Information on the Chicago Architecture Biennial website.
